  • What exactly is the ELD mandate?
    • Congressionally mandated as a part of MAP-21, the ELD mandate is intended to help create a safer work environment for drivers, and make it easier and faster to accurately track, manage, and share records of duty status (RODS) data. An ELD synchronizes with a vehicle engine to automatically record driving time, for easier, more accurate hours of service (HOS) recording.
  • Does the mandate apply to me?
    • In general, the rule applies to interstate drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) (as defined in 49 CFR 390.5) who are currently required to keep Records of Duty Status (RODS). The following are not required to use ELDs (but carriers may choose to use ELDs even if they are not required):
      • Drivers who use paper logs no more than 8 days during any 30-day period
      • Driveaway-towaway drivers (transporting a vehicle for sale, lease, or repair)
      • Drivers of vehicles manufactured before model year 2000
  • When did the mandate take effect?
    • December 18, 2017
  • What will happen if I am not compliant?  What are the penalties?
    • The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and FMCSA announced a phased-in approach where in the first six months, drivers will not be put out of service if they don’t have an ELD. However, they could still be cited and fined; each jurisdiction will decide on its own how strict that initial enforcement will be.
  • How much does it cost?
    • ELD Only Pricing - ELD Only Device: $149.99; Tablet: $99.99; Monthly Subscription: $27.99/Month/Device
    • ELD + GPS Pricing: GPS & Cellular Device (ELD + GPS Device): $149.99; Tablet: $99.99; Monthly Subscription: $37.99/Month/Device
  • Do I need GPS?  I just want ELD?
    • We do offer an ELD only option for $27.99/month/device. The ELD only option will not allow access to the GPS tracking platform. Adding GPS tracking to your organization is a great choice though. It provides more insight and allows you to locate and track vehicles in real-time, so you can better manage your fleet. • If I get pulled over what do I show the officer?
    • Authorized safety officials who conduct roadside enforcement activities (i.e., traffic enforcement and inspections) or compliance safety investigations will have the option of choosing a minimum of one electronic data transfer method (wireless Web services or email) and one “local” electronic data transfer method (USB2.0 or Bluetooth), depending on the type of ELD.
  • What makes your service compliant?
    • The GPS and Application have been tested to meet the standards set forth by the FMCSA.
  • Tell me how it works?  Do I log the data?  Is it automatic?
    • The driving status is automatically logged when the vehicle is in drive. The tablet will be locked to status changes at that time. When parked the driver can manually set to a different status.
  • All the ELD companies look alike to me.  Why is LGPS the best option?
    • We are dedicated to not just selling you a device, but partnering with you to not only ensure you understand the ELD mandate and how it applies to your business, but also to help you find the best FMSCA certified ELD solution for your organization at an affordable price.

  • How does installation work?
    • Installation can be as simple as connecting to the ECM (vehicle diagnostic port), putting the tracker in the vehicle windshield and pairing to a tablet that is set in a holder (being a seat or other vehicle pocket). You can also have a more professional installation done to allow for another connection to the diagnostics port for mechanics and the tablet put in a mounted cradle for driver convenience. An ELD device is not wired to the battery. It is connected to the port in the vehicle. There is no outside installation required.
  • Can I update data that was mistakenly inputted?
    • Yes, if a correction needs to be made, edits are possible.
  • I have GPS with Lightning GPS now and want to add ELD.  Do I need to buy all new equipment?
    • For this question we need to look specifically at the equipment you currently have.
      • Scenario 1) If you already have equipment that is plugged into the diagnostic port, yes, you would need new equipment. The equipment you have is not ELD compliant and is not sending the data required for recording the statuses.
      • Scenario 2) You already have a GPS tracker that is wired. You can still use this GPS tracker if it is a model we support. If that is the case, you would purchase the ELD only kit, which will include an ECM linking device to read the engine data and the tablet to record the data.
